It’s common knowledge that there are plenty of advantages of dental implants, but what are the hidden downsides?
Is the process as simple as it seems? As full mouth dental implants become more and more popular, patients are speaking out on their experience and telling the truth about the downsides and advantages of dental implants.
In the video below, a dental implant patient who has had her smile for over a year shares every detail of her life-changing procedure. If you're considering a smile transformation, you’ll want to stick around for what surprised her the most.
Take this quick, 60-second quiz to see if you may be a candidate for full mouth dental implants.
Benefits and Advantages of Dental Implants
Those with missing or failing teeth know all too well the struggles that they come with. Difficulty eating, trouble speaking, and not feeling confident to smile can all be challenges that come from bad teeth.
The good news is that full mouth dental implants work to address these issues and more. Here are some of the advantages of dental implants that V shares above.
- Pain-Free Surgery with Quick Recovery: V describes what it was like to wake up after her dental implants were placed, “I woke up so refreshed, also a little loopy, but very refreshed.”
Going into surgery, V was very nervous. She was worried about pain and recovery. Having had some teeth extracted before she knew it could hurt!
Her nerve-wracking expectations were fortunately dashed as she was able to get all of her questions answered and comfortably slept through the surgery without feeling a thing.
Waking up, she felt refreshed and was surprised the discomfort was not at all what she thought it would be.
- Permanent Teeth in Just 24 Hours: V knew that traditional processes of dental implants usually involve a set of temporary teeth that patients have to wear for what could be up to 10+ months. That wasn’t going to work for her.
She knew that she wanted to get her permanent teeth right away so she could get used to them. "The idea of temporary versus permanent was a big deal... I needed to get used to them."
Fortunately for V, getting permanent teeth in 24 hours is possible at Nuvia. No temporary teeth required.
- A Natural Look and Confidence Boost: A new smile made all the difference for V. Talking about what it was like to first get her new teeth she shares, “You can't stop smiling because you can't believe you look this good."
- Freedom to Enjoy Food Again: One of the main struggles people with missing or failing teeth experience is being able to enjoy food. For V, and others, this is one of the huge advantages of dental implants.
"I haven't really found anything that I can't eat with these teeth." Although there is an adjustment period and a period where patients eat a soft-food diet (things that can be cut with a plastic fork), full mouth dental implants are able to restore a person’s ability to eat all of their favorite foods.
- Stain Resistance and Durability: As a coffee lover, V was used to taking extra precautions to not stain her teeth when she had the drink. Now, thanks to the zirconia material, her implants remain bright and white despite drinking a lot of coffee.
"There’s no staining. These ones do not stain."
Other Advantages of Dental Implants:
- Long-Lasting Solution: With proper care, implants can last decades or even a lifetime. This is a stark contrast to temporary solutions like dentures.
- Bone Preservation: Dental implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing the bone loss that typically occurs with missing teeth.
- No Adhesives or Slipping: Unlike dentures, dental implants are fixed securely and don’t require messy adhesives to attach to the fake teeth that are fastened to them.
Permanent Teeth in 24 Hours vs Traditional Methods
One of the great advantages of dental implants that you won’t find everywhere is that you can get them and your permanent set of teeth in 24 hours.
Traditional methods may take up to 10+ months to get patients their permanent teeth. Not at Nuvia.
After the dental implant procedure, your set of custom, zirconia teeth are created in Nuvia’s in-house lab overnight. When you return the next day, you have your permanent smile.

Hidden Downsides of Dental Implants
While V excitedly shared about the advantages of dental implants, she didn’t hesitate to discuss some challenges she faced during the process as well:
- Fear and Anxiety Before Surgery: The idea of having all her teeth removed at once and going under anesthesia for the first time made V pretty nervous. "The extraction of my entire mouth... It was terrifying."
Her feelings going into the procedure were clear as she tells her story; however, it is also clear how helpful it was to have a compassionate and committed anesthesiologist there to answer all of her questions and put her at ease.
V’s surgery was even slightly delayed as she had so many questions and the Nuvia team wanted to make sure she got all the answers and felt comfortable going into the surgery. She reports, ““it helped me to be like, okay, I'm gonna trust you now, let's do this”.
- Speech Adjustments: Going from having some missing teeth to a full mouth can be an adjustment for many patients. "I had to relearn how to talk... I couldn’t pronounce my s’s, f’s, or t-h sounds."
Adjusting to the new structure in her mouth made speaking and singing difficult at first, though V mastered it within six months.

- Temporary Eating Restrictions: V recalls that during the healing period of around 4 months she had to follow a soft food diet and had to get creative with her meals. "Not having [certain foods] drove me insane... I couldn’t have my chips."
- Increased Saliva Production: This was another adjustment for V. When she first got her new teeth she wasn’t used to the saliva her mouth produced. "At times, I was like a camel... because I had so much saliva."
However, much like other side effects that came with dental implants, this quickly resolved and she got used to her new teeth.
While these downsides were temporary, V emphasized that the results and the advantages of dental implants were worth the challenges:
"You just gotta have patience with yourself and have a sense of humor with it."

Advantages of Dental Implants vs Dentures
When comparing dental implants to dentures, there are a few advantages to consider:
Durability and Longevity
Dentures may need frequent replacements, repairs, and adhesives, while dental implants are a one-time investment.
Stability and Functionality
Dental implants provide a secure bite, allowing patients to eat hard foods like apples and tacos without fear. V comments about her dental implants, "The difference in the bite... was a big deal."
Natural Look and Feel
Many patients don’t feel that their dentures look or feel natural. On the other hand, many people find it difficult to spot false teeth with dental implants.
Health Benefits
Dental implants help maintain jawbone density which is essential for oral health.
How Does the Cost Compare?
While dentures may seem more affordable upfront, they may become more expensive over time due to maintenance, adhesives, and replacements. Full mouth dental implants, specifically at Nuvia, offer a one-time fee with no hidden costs. Here’s what’s included:
- A highly skilled team of oral surgeons, a CRNA and restorative dentists.
- General anesthesia for a comfortable procedure.
- Permanent zirconia teeth created in Nuvia’s in-house lab, eliminating third-party markups.
